We live in a time of what Walter Benjamin called “emergency,” a moment of potential for both imminent foreclosure---and imminent potential---of successfully challenging capitalist social structures.
This page is a portal onto social movements where such resistance is alive.
It will serve as a digest of articles, bulletins, reports, briefs, analyses of struggles for social change, many of them driven by anti-capitalist politics.
Among the topics we’ll track here are movements against the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump; fights within the labor movement for stronger unions; LGBTQI+ struggles; feminist, and social reproduction feminist battles against erosions of rights, reproductive justice, and freedom from sex/gender discrimination of all kinds. Here is an example, a great piece by Judith Levine on unions and sexual harassment.
We will also of course track Palestine----especially in the wake of the Trump administrations egregious pronouncement that it will recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, a move Palestinians have likened to the Palestinian Authority recognizing Mexico as part of the United States. Here, for example, is the response to the announcement from the Palestinian Boycott National Committee (BNC).
We will pay special attention to the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement, which continues to grow and panic the Israeli state by exposing the apartheid like conditions it has produced. Here is a powerful statement from the US Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel against censorship of Palestinian voices. And here an overview of the Palestine solidarity movement by Loubna Qutami.
We will also follow anti-racist struggles against police violence, mass incarceration, and what Michelle Alexander calls “The New Jim Crow.” Here for example is the Black for Palestine Newsletter.
We will draw from anti-capitalist writing on the environment and natural world. We will work against the capitalocene, as exemplified here by Jason Moore’s overview of the topic.
We will follow the resurrection of anti-capitalist protests in the Middle East, from Palestine to Iran, as discussed here, and in this call for renewed BDS in Tunisia, to this 858 Archival project of recorded footage from the Egyptian Revolution.
And we will follow the movement against resurgent fascism both in the U.S. and around the world. I begin by citing this article on the creation of the Campus Antifascist Network, founded this past summer to respond to white supremacist fliering and organizing on U.S. university campuses, and attacks by the alt.right on leading progressive faculty voices. The Campus Antifascist Netowrk (CAN) now has more than 13 chapters in the U.S., Canada and U.K. We encourage you to join if you are affiliated with a University, or start your own anti-fascist grouping.
